BARBIE GIRL

in a Barbie World

Karte Blanche June 2023 issue Malibu Barbie Pop Ups Summer 2023

Barbie of the 50s and 60s had pursed lips and a sideways glance, but that changed forever in 1971 when Malibu Barbie made the trip up Pacific Coast Highway with a completely new face, smile, and a California attitude complete with a golden tan and long blond hair with highlights. The first Malibu Barbie retailed in the Sears Wish Book catalog for $1.94 and was soon joined by Malibu Ken, Malibu Skipper, Malibu Francie, Malibu Christie, and Malibu PJ. The blue bathing suit with sunglasses and beach towel were soon augmented with groovy 1970s fashions & accessories.

Designer Trina Turk saw an original Barbie Dream House on display at LACMA and created a whole line of vintage inspired fashions for the doll and for human-sized Barbies alike. “I was looking at the house made of slotted cardboard” Turk said, “And realized Barbie is actually a modernist.”

In 2021 Malibu Barbie turned 50 and LA designer Jonathan Adler created a real-life Barbie dream house cliffside home in Malibu with wall-to-wall pink carpeting, original Andy Warhol portrait and chandelier made of 30 blond wigs.

The "Barbiecore" pink aesthetic became a fashion trend since 2022, when the Valentino Fall Runway show debuted - Valentino Pink PP after the fashion house's creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli. Hot pink is the preferred shade but the tones of bubblegum and fuchsia also embody the vibe as does the decade spanning the 1980s to the early 2000s. When the official BARBIE movie trailer released - all things pink were here to stay with the addition of her many iconic accessories from pink plastic purses and pink platform pumps to pink rollerblades of course.

PINK CARPET NIGHT at World of Barbie invites guests for a night of glamour, dancing, and high fashion fun. Guests are encouraged to wear their most glamorous “Barbiecore™” outfits greeted to live music, snack bar, and more within the backdrop of World of Barbie. Pink Carpet Nights in Santa Monica will begin in June - tickets available thru Fever.

MALIBU BARBIE POP UP Restaurant in 2 cities this summer - opened in New York City on May 17th and heading to Chicago on June 7th. MasterChef semi-finalist Becky Brown created the menu for the fast-casual restaurant, which will emphasize an all-day brunch, desserts and a drink menu, which has both kid and adult versions. Cocktails on the grown-up menu include Cosmos, French 71, Mojito, a Think Pink Margarita. The immersive will also feature exclusive merchandise to buy and signature photo moments for fans to interact with. Tickets at Bucket Listers.

MALIBU BARBIE Themed Pop-Up Truck - The Barbie Truck Totally Throwback Tour is continuing its 50th anniversary tour that began in L.A. in the summer of 2021.
