Consisting of over 2,000 pieces - the collection features works from renowned French artists such as François Boucher, Anne Vallayer-Coster and Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun... “We've always envisioned this collection remaining whole so it could be more than the sum of its parts, and we wanted it to go to a major American museum where the most visitors could experience these artistic treasures, said Jeffrey Horvitz, “…There was no more perfect choice than the Art Institute.”

Chicago Athletic Association

Jaunt Chicago

"This 1893 Venetian Gothic landmark is a living, breathing ode to Chicago’s rich story - where the spirit of play reigned supreme. After all, this is the city where the can-do attitude of Ernie “Let’s Play Two!” Banks lives on. Where the father of Chicago blues, Muddy Waters, shook all night long. And Sir Duke tickled the ivories at The Blue Note. And this was the club whose venerable members swam with five-time Olympic gold medalist Johnny Weissmuller (the original Hollywood Tarzan) and watched fellow member Pudge Heffelfinger own so much end zone, he became football’s first pro. Reserved for the elite and privileged for 122 years - until doors opened to welcome everyone." Today, Chicago Athletic Association is both a novel downtown destination hotel on the doorstep of Millennium Park and a historic monument to the big-shouldered spirit that defines old world Chicago with evocative traces of athletic heritage paired with a new-world modern design by award-winning Roman & Williams (of Fast Company) celebrating sport and competition - pommel horse-inspired benches, vintage swimming pool tilework and elevators that feature pristine basketball-like floorboards. The all-seasoned rooftop restaurant Cindy's has sweeping views of Millennium Park and Lake Michigan while providing a remarkable backdrop for Top Chef contestant Executive Chef Kaleena Bliss and her inspired menu featuring local, wild, seasonal produce and fresh seafood. While the James Beard award-winning Cherry Circle Room restaurant in the way back melds the building’s historic original features with modern design and a refined dining menu featuring throwback cocktails and fancy tableside presentations. But our favourite draw is literally - The Drawing Room on the second-floor lobby. This grand room makes you feel like you’re in one of Europe’s centuries-old university libraries with dozens of seating areas interspersed among the room’s three fireplaces, an ideal setting to sip your morning coffee or dig into a good book and a classic cocktail. The Drawing Room offers an afternoon and evening dining menu for guests, with options ranging from light bites to more substantial entrées, seasonal & classic cocktails and curated spirits.

THE VIOLET HOUR

1520 N Damen Ave

Wicker Park

Jaunt Chicago

From Bernard DeVoto’s The Hour, “This is the violet hour, the hour of hush and wonder, when the affections glow and valor is reborn.” This bar is located in a building lacking any signage with the only identifier being the rotating street artwork. Widely known as the bar that put Chicago cocktail bars on the map and was started by the guys who did the same for New York City with Milk & Honey. The Violet Hour has maintained its crown as the city’s best cocktail bar for sixteen+ years and counting. A velvet-curtained entrance entreats guests to wait until the right table or bar seating is available. If this is your first time, order the now ubiquitous Paper Plane. It was within these walls; the modern classic cocktail was created for Violet Hour’s opening menu by none other than the king of modern classic cocktails himself - Sam Ross. Toby Maloney, who helped open The Violet Hour, asked bartender Sam Ross, with whom he had worked at Milk & Honey in New York, to create an original cocktail for the Chicago bar. Ross came up with a drink he called the Paper Plane, after a song by M.I.A. (The tune’s name is actually “Paper Planes.”). The drink first served at The Violet Hour did contain Campari - the Italian aperitivo was original to the drink that Ross conceived as an equal-parts riff on the Last Word, the pre-Prohibition cocktail that was resurrected in the aughts by Seattle bartender Murray Stenson. But two days later, he was having second thoughts - he subbed in Aperol and was immediately satisfied with the result and thus was born the bright orange drink that has gone on to conquer the world. Rooted in pre-prohibition style libations, this James Beard Award-winning bar program has a seasonally rotating cocktail list and selection of sought-after spirits - an iconic destination for cocktail enthusiasts.

Chicago Green

Jaunt Chicago

Chicago once again went all out for St. Patrick's Day with one of the city's most iconic traditions which was originally started by the Chicago Plumbers Union - The Chicago River Dyeing where boats spread dye throughout the river until the water is a bright, emerald-green. The eco-friendly dye is often visible several days after the event and through St. Patrick's Day. The story goes that in 1961 a man by the name of Stephen Bailey who was the business manager of the plumbers union, was approached by one of his plumbers dressed in white coveralls when he noticed they had stained in "a perfect shade of green" or "an Irish green to better describe it." Bailey and his plumbers discovered that it was from the dye used to detect leaks in the river. That's when Mr. Bailey bellowed, "Call the mayor ... we will dye the Chicago River green!" According to Local 130, other cities have attempted similar feats but never found success. "As the late Stephen Bailey has said, the road from Chicago to Ireland is marked in green, ... from the Chicago River to the Illinois River, then to the Mississippi, up the Gulf Stream and across the Atlantic you can see the beautiful green enter the Irish Sea, clearly marking the way from Chicago to Ireland." What's in the dye? The plumbers union still holds the river-dyeing honors today, but you won't be able to find their recipe - the environmentally friendly dye remains a closely kept secret.

THE GREEN MILL

Lounge & Jazz Club
Jaunt Chicago

The Green Mill Jazz Club has played host to a number of famous and often infamous celebrities. Opened in 1907 as Pop Morse's Roadhouse, the "Mill" was a stopping place for mourners to celebrate the passing of a friend before proceeding to St. Boniface's Cemetery. By 1910, new owners converted the roadhouse into the Green Mill Gardens, complete with lantern-lit outdoor dancing and drinking areas and boasting such headliners as Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor and Sophie Tucker. As the twenties roared, The Green Mill became mobster territory when Al Capone's henchman - "Machinegun" Jack McGurn, gained a 25% ownership of the club. The cocktail lounge is best known as a former speakeasy and mobster hangout for Italian boss Al Capone. Capone had his own lush green booth that allowed him to enjoy nightly shows while keeping an eye on both entrances. In the case of raids, tunnels beneath the bar lead out to the streets for a quick escape and also served to smuggle alcohol in. While the trap door to the tunnels still exists - you can’t explore them. Throughout the 1930s, '40s, and 50s, The Green Mill continued to pack 'em in with a heady mix of swing, dance and jazz music. Uptown crowds from Aragon Ballroom or Uptown and Riviera Theaters would "stop in for one" before or after shows. Business began to slip in the mid-seventies, then in 1986, owner Dave Jemilo bought The Green Mill and restored it to its prohibition-era, speakeasy décor. Walking into the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge is like taking a step back into the 1920s. Jazz and Blues play hard and loud all week with multiple bands per night. Many patrons dress in clothes from the era and swing dance steps away from the band stage. The nightclub hosts a number of bands, poetry slams and jam sessions that often last until 5 am 7 nights a week.
